Meet our Intern: James Hu
James Hu is a student at Washtenaw Community College, transferring this summer to Eastern Michigan University, where he will major in accounting. He joined ShindelRock as a 2024 tax season intern, where he is assisting the ShindelRock tax professionals with return preparation and organizing.
What are you doing during your internship at ShindelRock? What do you hope to come away with at the end of the season?
During my internship at ShindelRock, I’m gaining hands-on experience in some of the day-to-day operations at a public accounting firm. I became familiar with some of the tax software the firm uses and how to prepare tax forms. I hope that in the end, I’ll have learned tons of interesting things that I wouldn’t have learned in my college classes.
What do you love about public accounting, what drew you to the profession?
I’m pursuing a career in public accounting as a stepping stone to becoming a certified public accountant (CPA). The CPA designation is highly regarded in the accounting profession and can open doors to many career opportunities for me.
How did you choose ShindelRock, and what characteristics of a good place to intern did you see in ShindelRock?
ShindelRock stood out to me among the many firms I interviewed at. They’re a smaller to mid-sized firm that offers a family-like atmosphere, with a culture that encourages open communication and collaboration. I feel that I can contribute to a positive work environment where I’m comfortable seeking assistance and developing a broad skill set.
What is your background, college and degree plans, etc.?
I recently moved to Novi from Ann Arbor, where I grew up. I’m currently finishing up classes at Washtenaw Community College and transferring to Eastern Michigan University in the summer for a bachelor’s degree in accounting. I plan to graduate in a year and start studying for the CPA exam.
