Podiatrists form statewide medical group, look to contract with insurers (subscription may be required)

…Steven Wisinski, partner with ShindelRock, a Novi-based accounting, tax and consulting firm, said many single-specialty physician groups in Michigan have been discussing a variety of affiliation options to save money on office and professional costs.
“We hear a lot of consolidation on a regional basis, but not on a national basis like what the portraitists are doing,” Wisinski said. “You have a bunch of small businesses that realize they can share costs, eliminate duplication and maximize revenue if they get together.”
Wisinski said hospitals are also trying to recruit physicians into their organizations through employment or joint venture partnerships. “Hospitals sometimes can get higher reimbursement for procedures, and small practices don’t have the clout to negotiate fee-for-service” reimbursement rates with payers, Wisinski said…
