Meet the SR Staff: Olivia Metcalfe, Intern

We get to know Olivia Metcalfe, a recent graduate of Wayne State University, as she joins our ShindelRock team as a Tax Season 2022 intern:

What are you doing during your internship at ShindelRock? What do you hope to come away with at the end of the season?

My internship at ShindelRock has been a great hands-on learning experience so far! From 1099s, organizers, and even the main tax software, I’ve been enjoying seeing what really goes on behind the scenes during tax season. I’m excited to learn about all the tax basics and even more complicated procedures in a real-time environment, while finding my own space in the tax professionals’ world.

What do you love about public accounting, and what drew you to the profession?

Both of my older brothers, as well as my parents, are CPAs, so I’ve always been surrounded by it. While I initially didn’t chose accounting as my major, I’m glad I changed it. I think accounting is an amazing field because it has so much relevance to everyone, and there are so many people who need help with finances so I’m looking forward to being able to help all kinds of people. There’s always something to learn and I love learning, which I know will be doing throughout my entire career as an accountant.

How did you choose ShidelRock, and what characteristics of a good place to intern did you see in ShindelRock and the people?

After my first interview at ShindelRock, I knew this was where I really wanted to work. My interview felt very personable, like they really wanted to know me and determine if I would be a good addition to the already-amazing team here. I really enjoy the fact that this is a smaller accounting firm, it makes me feel like I can ask anyone when I need help, and that everyone wants to see me succeed.

What is your background, college and degree plans, etc.?

I just graduated from Wayne State University in December of 2022, so this is my next step as an accounting professional. I am still thinking about going back to school for a masters or to just go for my CPA, but for now I’m enjoying the “9-5 life” and getting hands on experience as an accountant!
