Meet the SR Staff: Intern Ira Dixon

Meet the second of our 2020 tax season interns, Ira Dixon:

What are you doing during your internship at ShindelRock? What do you hope to come away with at the end of the term?

During my internship, I am learning the different aspects of public accounting and the tax profession. I have been given the opportunity to take the lead on preparing personal property taxes for individuals and corporations. In addition, I have been able to assist with preparing 1099s, filing various 1040s tax returns, and working with the senior accountant on a litigation project. I hope to, at the end of the internship, come away with an understanding of how busy season really runs and learn best practices for working in a professional setting.

What do you love about public accounting? What drew you to the profession? What keeps you here?

The thing I love about public accounting is the exposure to various industries and having a variety of work. Also, public accounting allows you to be able to collaborate with colleagues and learn from one another on complex and challenging tasks. Lastly, helping others solve problems is a rewarding task in itself.

How did you choose ShindelRock, and what characteristics of a good place to work did you see in ShindelRock and the people?

I chose ShindelRock because of the energy during my interview; everyone was warm and welcoming. There is a work-life balance which is very important to me, and ShindelRock allows you to have responsibility for your work and work multiple tasks at once. This shows they care about the interns learning new skills and being a part of the team, while also taking the time to walk you through the steps if you do not understand. I am very excited and thankful to be a part of the team!

What is your background, college and degree plans, etc.?

I recently graduated from Oakland University in winter of 2019 with 150 credits and have been working on taking the CPA exam. This is my first public accounting experience and I am excited to see what’s ahead for my career as a CPA.
