Meet our SR Intern: Ashley King
We get to know Ashley King, a Grand Valley State University grad, as she joins our ShindelRock team as an intern:
What previous experience do you have in accounting?
Before ShindelRock, I spent two tax seasons as an intern for a firm in Holland, MI. I also participated in an accounting/finance internship at the Van Andel Institute in Grand Rapids and spent a year working in Accounts Payable.
How did you choose ShindelRock, and what characteristics of a good place to intern did you see in ShindelRock?
I chose ShindelRock because of its strong commitment to professional growth and development. ShindelRock stood out as a place where interns are encouraged to explore various accounting areas, fostering a well-rounded learning experience. I was impressed by the firm’s supportive culture, which allows interns the flexibility to take initiative and shape their own learning paths. With guidance rather than a rigid structure, this approach creates an ideal environment for a meaningful internship tailored to my career goals and interests. At ShindelRock, I feel empowered to actively engage in my growth and gain valuable insights into accounting.
What do you expect to work on during your internship at ShindelRock? What do you hope to come away with at the end of the season?
One area I am especially hoping to learn about is business returns. I would also love to gain some experience in auditing.
What drew you to study accounting, and what makes you excited about the profession?
While at GVSU, I took an accounting class to satisfy one of my majors, and it clicked as a career path in which I feel confident. I am excited to bring value to the team and help other businesses in their ventures.
What is your background, college/major and graduation plans, etc.?
I graduated from Grand Valley State University in August 2023 with a BBA in accounting and a BS in hospitality management. From there, I was hired on to a full-time position in Accounts Payable. After this internship, I hope to obtain my Certification for Public Accountancy, continue my employment with ShindelRock, and potentially earn a Master’s Degree in Accounting.
