The Internal Revenue Service announced that the nation’s tax season will start on Friday, February 12, 2021, when the tax agency will begin accepting and processing 2020 tax year returns.  It has advised people to file their returns electronically and include direct deposit information for the quickest turnaround times on receiving a refund.

It’s expected the IRS may need to distribute a third round of COVID-19 pandemic relief checks while also processing 2020 tax returns.  It would be the continuation of a busy time for the department; between refunds from 2019 income tax returns and the two rounds of direct stimulus checks, the agency pushed out almost $735 billion to taxpayers in 2020, according to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig.
